Ever since we discovered craft-loving holiday pros Stitchtopia, we’ve been itching to take a trip of our own. Just think of it… a blissful few days away with nothing to think about but sewing, exploring and meeting fellow-sewists! So we’ve put together this round-up of the best sewing minibreaks (and fully-fledged holidays) from Stitchtopia this year. Check out this lovely lot…
6 of the best sewing holidays for 2017
1. South African Quilts and the Western Cape

2. Italian Villa Quilt Retreat
The very name of this Italian adventure tour is enough to have us packing our bags and digging out our passports! The 6-night trip takes place from 4 – 10th July and is set in the surroundings of the atmospheric Villa Luppis, where holiday makers will enjoy 4 days of patchwork classes with quilt-pro Philippa Naylor – trying out precision piecing, appliqué and machine or hand sewing tricks. They’ll even get to squeeze in a trip to Venice and a spot of wine tasting too! Find out more here.
3. Stitch & Quilt in County Donegal with Sew North
The Sew North quilting and crafting gathering in the very north of the Republic of Ireland has been on our must visit wish list for a while now! This trip sets off from 4 – 9th July and the event promises a skills-expanding series of workshops and demos, plus a special display of quilts all set among the spectacular landscape of County Donegal. Holiday makers also get to enjoy three expert stitching and embroidery workshops with local expert Louise Kelly, plus visits to the Donegal tweed mill, vibrant Derry and the Giant’s Causeway. 4. New England quilts in the Fall
Quilting star and applique-pro Mandy Shaw is taking a band of fellow sewing fans on this quilting adventure to New England and Canada this Autumn. The tour includes visits to Boston, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York State, following in the footsteps of civil rights activist Harriet Tubman, replicating her extraordinary journey (from slave to the first woman to appear on US currency) in the quilting blocks that Mandy will show you throughout the tour. The trip ends with a visit to Niagara Falls and a stay in Toronto. Find out more here.
5. Quilting in Regency Bath with Janice Gunner
Hmmmn stitching and sight seeing anyone? We’re very fond of the beautiful Roman city of Bath – after all we first came up with the idea for Simply Sewing magazine in our old office there! This trip takes in some of the city’s top spots for sewing fans, including the American Museum (home to the most mind-blowing collection of vintage quilts), the Jane Austen Centre and Bath Fashion Museum. Holiday makers will also enjoy 2 hand stitching workshops hosted by Janice Gunner. Sign us up! Find out more here.
6. Textures of Vietnam with Pat Archibald
This 2-week tour (7 – 22 November) showcases the rich colours and cultural highlights of Vietnam, visiting silk farms, weaving villages and lantern workshops and strolling through markets where traditional dress is still very much a part of everyday life. Along the way holiday makers will get to meet skilled craftspeople and also try their hand at some traditional crafts. Find out more here.
