How to sew a headband tutorial
Step one: Download, print and trace our free headband sewing pattern on to tracing paper. Cut out the template for the headband.
Step two: Iron lightweight interfacing onto the reverse of the printed fabric.
Step three: Lay the printed fabric with the interfacing and white cotton fabric pieces flat and draw around the template, flipping it over so that you have two long headband pieces marked on the fabric. Cut out a 15cm (6in) length of white fold-over elastic.
Step four: Pin the two headband pieces right sides (RS) together.
Step five: Sew along the drawn template line along the two long edges only, leaving the two short ends open. Trim the excess.
Turn the headband RS out though one of the short ends.
Step six: Tuck in the two short ends and pin the raw edges of the elastic inside them by 1cm (3⁄8in).
Step seven: Sew across the short ends to close them and hold the elastic in place. Work two rows of stitches to secure the elastic firmly.
Step eight: Topstitch around the headband 5mm (1⁄4in) in from the outside edge.
